How to Hide Thinning Hair

Is there anything worse than coming to grips with thinning hair? It starts with denial, right? “My hair isn’t getting thin, it’s my imagination.” Eventually, perhaps inevitably, your scalp shows through, revealing the truth.

Man or woman, thinning hair is a real blow to your confidence. Maybe even more so for a woman than a man, if only because it’s so unexpected. Men have options - the comb over (not ideal, but still an option for a while) or the shaved head, which is not only acceptable but attractive. Do the names Bruce Willis or Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson ring a bell?

And while thinning hair can have many causes, it is a telltale sign of aging. As you age, your scalp produces less hair and each strand gets thinner. Thanks, Mother Nature (SMH).

So, What Do You Do?

The first stop should be to your doctor to rule out any nutritional deficiencies, side effects from medication, or an underlying health problems. Who knows? Your doctor does, and may have a simple solution that will work for you.

Next, make sure you’re not adding to the fallout with bad hair care habits like washing your hair too frequently, or not frequently enough, and/or over-processing. Also, take a look at the shampoo and conditioner you're using. It may be time to switch to something that will gently cleanse and help to thicken each strand, while supporting scalp health too.

In the meantime, to conceal the fallout, you can try a few tried-and-true tricks to help hair look thicker and healthier.

Time for a new, shorter cut. Shorter hair has less weight, which helps to create more volume. Adding layers helps, too, particularly around your face while keeping the back full. The result? Your hair has more body.

Keep the gray! Gray hair expands the cuticle, so it adds volume. But if it ages you too much, touch up the roots once a month, at most. Try adding highlights to create the look of added texture.

Blow out your hair after washing. Start with a round brush, pull up a section of your hair, and dry in the opposite direction. Sure, this takes time and patience, but the results are so worth it! Just make sure to use a heat protectant to ensure you don’t damage hair further.

Hair extensions are an instant fix. Extensions can turn thin and limp hair into the fabulous tresses you've always wanted, but be sure to work with an experienced technician who understands how to work with hair that is thinning so as to not make matters worse.  Remember that extensions can add weight to strands, causing pulling and tugging which can lead to greater hair loss so you really need to make sure you’re working with an expert.

Try hair building fibers to help conceal bald spots and scalp lines. The trick here is to find the right shade; otherwise, you'll draw more, not less, attention to your scalp. Many professional stylists recommend products that contain Keratin fibers derived from natural wool. Avoid those using cotton or rayon. Wool's natural static charge helps the fibers bind with your hair for a natural look.

The most important tip of all… get your hair and scalp into better shape! The idea is to protect existing hair, and encourage volume and body. Scalp and follicle health starts with the right shampoo and conditioner. They should work synergistically and be designed specifically for the needs of fine and thinning hair.

Some Shampoos and Conditioners Can Make Your Hair Look Thinner, not Thicker

This is where our Thickening Shampoo and Thickening Conditioner can save the day. First, the scalp therapy focused shampoo cleanses your thinning hair and exfoliates your scalp without stripping essential oils. Next, it fortifies hair cuticles and helps improve shaft thickness. Finally, antioxidants help protect hair from environmental stressors. Bottom line: your hair feels fuller and looks thicker.

The color-safe Thickening Conditioner nourishes and hydrates the hair cuticle and improves hair shaft thickness. A special flax protein helps protect hair from breakage, Biotin supports hair volume and strength, and Panthenol hydrates as it shines.

Finally, your tresses get the ultimate thickening treatment when you add Volume Enhancing Foam. This one-of-a-kind formula intensifies natural volume to make the most of your hair. How's this for success? A survey of men and women using Volume Enhancing Foam revealed that 97% said their hair felt/looked fuller and more voluminous. A full 94% said their thinning hair looked thicker, healthier, and nourished.* Sound too good to be true? It is true!

Use this trifecta to make the most of that hair you’ve got, and give hair and scalp what they need to be as healthy, hydrated, and protected a possible.
