A quick Google search turns up a thousand and one ways to increase your hair volume. From DIY rinses to ‘secret’ drying techniques to outlandish miracle rollers, just about everyone has the solution to pump up the volume of your hair. So why are so many of us still disenchanted with our fine, thin strands?

Not all volume-boosting tricks work effectively, but a few proven strategies can help transform your hair into the thicker-looking, fuller-looking locks you crave.

Start With the Right Cut

The goal is more luxurious, healthier-looking locks with body and natural lift. When it comes to the right coif for thin, fine hair, most agree that a few styles can really help:

  • Short bob with layers – layers work to give the illusion of fullness
  • Medium length with choppy ends – thin hair looks flat, so choppy ends will help
  • Bob cuts – hair looks fuller at the crown
  • Side-swept styles – a deep side part, one where you let the thicker side add volume
  • Shoulder-length cuts – also add volume
  • Long layer cut – long hair can appear flat at the scalp… adding layers solves the problem
Choose the Right Shampoo and Conditioner

There's no harm in trying home-spun remedies. But be prepared to be disappointed. Supermodel hair isn’t coming from a bottle of olive oil or a rosemary rinse.

The good news? The lush locks you covet are easier to attain than ever. You can thank science and a new generation of products designed specifically to add volume and body as soon as one application. These marvels of haircare are the real deal.

So, when you’re serious about pumping up the volume, here’s the plan:

  • First, try a hydrating hair mask to “rush” moisture into dry hair. Why is this important? Because fine hair is often brittle. The solution is hydration. Dryness is the enemy.
  • In place of a mask, you can restore moisture with a hair oil. Apply at the ends to combat dryness, prevent breakage, and add body. Choose an oil that won’t leave a greasy residue, like argan, jojoba, or avocado.
  • Cleanse and condition your hair with a hydrating, volumizing shampoo and nourishing conditioner.

Note: Stay away from any shampoo containing sulfate detergents. These surfactants strip away too much of the natural oil required to keep hair healthy and hydrated. Your hair comes away looking dry and your scalp can become irritated.

A top-flight thickening shampoo should feel light, allowing your hair to bounce and not fall flat. Avoid any ingredients that add weight to your hair. There’s no volume when strands are glued to your scalp.

As for conditioner, it should contain plant-based proteins (like flax) and oils (like jojoba) to protect from breakage. For additional thickness, look for loquat leaf, which helps with thinning hair.

If your conditioner contains panthenol, you’re on the right track, as it’s a terrific moisturizer (and one that won’t weigh down your hair). Of course, conditioners should also contain keratin or biotin. And preferably all three, which you can find in the thickening shampoo and conditioner from RevitaLash® Cosmetics. Balanced, hydrating, and gentle, the pair is the gold standard for women and men. This dynamic duo uses a cocktail of flax protein, loquat leaf, willow bark, ginseng, and jojoba seed oil for a well-rounded shampoo and conditioner to promote lasting volume—perfect for those with fine or thinning hair.

Try a Volume Enhancer

In addition to the right shampoo and conditioner, a volume enhancing product is essential for any routine for fuller-looking hair. Our Volume Enhancing Foam uses the same proprietary Bio-Peptin Complex® found in our lash and brow conditioners to help condition, strengthen, and soften hair while defending from breakage and brittleness.

And it’s easy to apply starting at the roots. The formula adds volume to each strand, so you can style your hair to your liking and head out with healthy-looking hair.

You can use Volume Enhancing Foam on wet or dry hair, but here’s a tip: For maximum lift, use on wet hair and then gently dry the roots… and go easy on the heat.

The result? You will love your hair again when it looks and feels thicker and healthier.

Other Factors That Can Affect Hair Volume

Limp, fine hair can be part of your genetic profile. If so, volumizing shampoos and conditioners and foams are your best bet. You will be astonished at the instant difference these cosmetic products can make. So… go for it!

Age is a factor. Hair can change over your lifetime in both density and texture. Volume enhancing products can help camouflage these changes.

There are several medical conditions indicated by suddenly thinning hair. If you’re concerned, visit your doctor and let her get to the root of the trouble.

Better nutrition will help improve your hair and scalp. Improved nutrition is not a quick fix, but over time the positive results can be substantial.

Along with a solid multivitamin, hair could benefit from additional protein in your diet. Why? Because protein is the building block of hair. And consider omega-3 fatty acids and vitamin D. Your hair, your body, and your mind will thank you!

When it comes to more volume and more body, you know what they say…go big!
